The Huelgas Ensemble, directed by its founder Paul van Nevel, began as the result of a previous generation's work in early music performance, led by, among others, Thomas Binkley and David Munrow. Remarkably, after more than 30 years, the Ensemble retains a sense of excitement, innovation and discovery, long after the mass recording industry and the New Age movement co-opted the esoteric sounds of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. When van Nevel, active at the Schola Cantorum Basilensis, founded the ensemble in 1971, a rediscovered instrumentarium of cornettos, sackbuts, recorders, and crumhorns were being jubilantly applied to early music performances. The Huelgas Ensemble then sat at the center of the movement towards "authentic" performance practices, and its interpretations were strongly influential. As the scholarly and performative norms for Medieval music have changed, so has the sound of Huelgas, most prominently depicted in its increased vocalizations. But the Ensemble has retained a mantle of eccentricity and innovation. Paul Joses: Paul Joses wurde 1953 in Dumbarton, einem kleinen Ort 20 km von Glasgow, in Schottland geboren. Es zog ihn schon vor vielen Jahren nach Deutschland; ein paar Jahre Berlin, Göttingen und Nürnberg, nie lange am selben Ort; immer auf der Suche. Ein Plätzchen zum Leben hat Paul in der Nähe von Paderborn gefunden. Von dort aus zieht er durch die Lande und erzählt seine musikalischen Geschichten. Als Folk- und Rockmusiker, jedoch hauptsächlich als Interpret seiner eigenen Lieder, tourte der Sänger und Gitarrist auch in der Schweiz, Holland und Grossbritannien. Seit Jahren hat er erfolgreiche Auftritte in vielen Städten Deutschlands. Ched Khaled: Der Roi du Raï (König des Raï) machte seine ersten Aufnahmen im Alter von 14 Jahren („Trigh Lycee“) und hatte als 28-Jähriger bereits über 100 Kassetten veröffentlicht. Khaled wurde Ende der 1970er und Anfang der 1980er Jahre bekannt als Teil der „Pop-Raï-Bewegung“, mit welcher der Raï Anschluss an die internationale Pop- und Rockmusikwelt fand und deren herausragendster Exponent er neben Cheb Mami und Chaba Fadela war. Das 1983 als erstes Rai-Stück im algerischen Radio gespielte El Mersem (Die Erinnerung) war ein Khaled-Stück. Aufgrund seiner exponierten Position und dem Erstarken islamistischer Kräfte im Land musste Khaled 1986 Algerien verlassen und ging nach Frankreich, wo er 1992 sein erstes vollständig nach westlichen Standards produziertes, in Los Angeles und Brüssel aufgenommenes Album Khaled veröffentlichte und zugleich das Cheb in seinem Namen fallen ließ. Der auf dieser Platte enthaltene Titel Didi ist bis heute seine meistverkaufte Single, die es selbst in Israel auf einen Spitzenplatz in den Charts brachte. 2007 wurde Didi vom deutschen Popduo Milk & Honey gecovert. Im Maghreb und in Frankreich ein Superstar, ist Khaled auch in der restlichen frankophonen und der arabischen Welt seit Jahren regelmäßig in den Hitparaden, jedoch ist er auch in der anglophonen Musikwelt bekannt und erfolgreich. Auch in Deutschland hat er eine Fangemeinde, wie beispielsweise seine ausverkauften Konzerte in der Altonaer Fabrik in den Jahren 2000 und 2004 beweisen. 2001 musste Khaled sich gegen Vorwürfe der Kollaboration und einen Boykottaufruf von konservativen Stimmen erwehren, nachdem er gemeinsam mit der israelischen Sängerin Noa in Rom gastierte und auf dem Konzert auch Vertreter der israelischen Regierung anwesend waren. Im September desselben Jahres wurde seine USA-Tour, die unter anderem gemeinsam mit Hakim geplant war, aufgrund der Terroranschläge am 11. September 2001 in den USA abgesagt. Gerard Korsten was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1960, and gained his diploma in violin studies through the Curtis Institute in America and the Salzburg Mozarteum. First Sándor Végh invited him to the Salzburg Camerata Academica to be its concert-master, then from 1987 to 1996 he held this post with the European Chamber Orchestra, during which time he conducted more and more. He frequently conducts the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, the British Hallé Orchestra, the Stockholm Chamber Orchestra, the Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie. He is a successful opera conductor: in 1997-98 he was principal conductor at the Pretoria Opera, and between 1999 and 2003 music director at the Cagliari Opera House. Last season his concert venues included the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Salzburg Grosses Festspielhaus and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. This year he is leading a new production of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte in Milan's La Scala Opera House. After five highly successful appearances, Korsten will conduct the Festival Orchestra for the sixth time. La Petite Bande : Additionally, by using authentic instruments and the original way of playing them, both in interpretation and sound quality, we strive to revive baroque music as faithfully as possible without lapsing into rigid academics. La Petite Bande (Belgium) was founded in 1972 by Sigiswald Kuijken at the request of the record company Deutsche Harmonia Mundi in order to record Lully's "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme", under the direction of Gustav Leonhardt. The orchestra takes its name and constitution from Lully's own orchestra at the court of Louis XIV. All its members are internationally renowned specialists in the early music field. Although originally La Petite Bande was not meant to become a permanent orchestra, the success of the recordings was such that they began to give concerts regularly. Having initially concentrated mainly on French music, the orchestra's repertoire has expanded over the years to include music by the Italian masters and that of Bach, Handel, Gluck, Haydn, Mozart and others. La Petite Bande has recorded instrumental as well as vocal music, including operas and oratorios from the Baroque and Classical periods. La Petite Bande currently makes recordings for Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Denon , Accent and Hyperion. La Petite Bande has performed in a multitude of international festivals and concert series, in Europe, Japan, Australia, South America and China.
